Summer and Feet

We had our first day of 90 degree weather yesterday.

I'm actually not a big fan of summer. I can withstand the heat and humidity, but the thing that I hate the most about summer is... feet. I hate feet. I have something equivalent to an anti-fetish of feet.

Summer brings about the shedding of clothes, and then comes the shedding of shoes and socks. Bare feet.

And heat and humidity only serve to exacerbate the smells of the city: hot garbage, animal waste, dirty sewer water, and sweaty feet.

I am nauseous just thinking about it.

If people are going to bare their feet in flip-flops or sandals that accentuate long worm-like toes or stubby Vienna sausage-like appendages, please, please, for the love of God, clean your feet! It's bad enough that I have to look at your gnarled, crusty, crumby toes - I don't want to be able to smell them either!

Have mercy on a foot-phobic girl.

G, meanwhile, eats feet.

(G at 4 months)

Sigh.
"And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair." ~ Kahlil Gibran

  1. You are definitely a New York girl and a city girl at that! In Cali and even more so in Hawaii it is all about the barefoot. Whether it is flippy floppies, Birkenstocks, or even your fave sandal when it is 100+ degrees shoes are just as gross. Although I am a fan of he shoe and there are certainly places open toes should be banned. I worked at a high tech company and lots of the developers wore sandals to work, and that was waaay gross to me. However today was an all sandal day for me and my feet loved it. i will admit though I did get a pedicure, so I do not have total gross, flaky ugly man feet1 :-D Oh and for the record it was my first pedi ever and it was AWESOME!

  2. G looked adorable in that picture! Some kids do eat feet. I was waiting for my baby to do so, but I was disappointed. He he!

  4. So you might not get along with Pieces, their sign is connected to the feet of the human body :)
Well, I am Taurus. Larynx is "my" physical "location" - shouldn't be too much problems between us!

  6. I wear my Keen sandals all year round in NH unless it is below 30 or if there is snow on the ground.

  7. Are there just a lack of nail salons in NYC?! Haha... everyone out here is in flip flops and sandals most of the time. I can't imagine summer any other way! But then again, we hit 90 degrees months ago. ;)

    Stay cool! xoxo

  8. I love that quote. :)

Things are going well over here. I'll post about it soon...the profound experiences in life are a lot harder to articulate.

    Good luck with the smells!!!

  9. We are almost always barefoot over here. Probably smelly, too. :)

The only time of year we wear shoes is when we've hit over 100 for 30 days straight and the cement cooks our feet.

Not sure which is worse - the smell of what is natural or baked synthetics. (Leather is especially gross in 100 degree weather because it is dead flesh- yuck!!! I prefer smelly feet, thank you!)

BTW - Baby G is still absolutely adorable!
